Nobody clicks through any more.

Your traffic can fall while your visibility rises. That sounds like agency nonsense until you look at where the answers are actually being read.

Part oneSearch

A client called us in March because their organic traffic was down about a fifth year on year. Nothing had broken. Rankings were the same or better. Enquiries were up.

What had changed was that a good proportion of the people who used to land on their site to read one paragraph were now getting that paragraph read to them somewhere else. The visit never happened. The answer still did.

Traffic stopped being the measure

For twenty years the deal was straightforward. Rank, get clicked, count the session. Every reporting dashboard ever built assumes that chain holds.

It holds much less often now. Answer engines summarise, cite and move on. Somebody can read your explanation of a thing, form a view about whether you know what you are talking about, and arrive on your site three weeks later by typing your name directly. Your analytics will file that as direct traffic and take no view on where it came from.

Part twoSearch
The session you lost and the enquiry you gained were the same person.

What we look at instead

Whether you are being cited, and for which questions. Whether branded search is rising, because that is what happens when people encounter you somewhere and come back deliberately. Whether enquiries mention things you have written about. Whether the pages that matter commercially are still pulling their weight, separately from the pages that mainly answer questions.

That last split matters more than it used to. A page whose job is to explain something can lose traffic and still be doing its job. A page whose job is to convert cannot.

The awkward conversation

None of this is as tidy as a traffic graph going up. It is harder to report on and harder to take credit for, which is precisely why a lot of the industry has not moved off the old measure.

We would rather have the awkward conversation. If your traffic is down and your enquiries are up, something is working. Optimising to get the traffic number back would mean chasing readers who were never going to buy anything.

If you take one thing

Before you panic about a traffic decline, separate your pages by what they are for. If the explaining pages are down and the commercial pages are steady, you are probably fine. If it is the other way round, that is worth a phone call.
